How Long to Study: Developing Good Study Habits

For being one of the most necessary learned habits in school, study habits vary wildly from student to student. With all the strategies and the long-standing tradition of many students to wait till the last minute to cram, the actual best ways and how long to study are commonly lost to students. With that being said, here are some tips on how to make best preparations of study time.

Prepare a Good Environment

One easy way to be far more productive while studying is to be sure you have prepared an area suitable for your studies. This includes being away from anybody who might distract you, televisions, excessive notifications on your phone, and anything else that will draw your attention away from your work. If you cannot find a suitable place at home for this, local libraries are a great place to study. Also, if you are looking over a lot of different sources, be sure to prepare an environment with plenty of space that is well organized for your purposes as well as how long you plan to study.

How Long to Study

How long you will need to study will generally depend on the amount of material you need to internalize and how many sessions of studying you can do. Everybody and their schedules are all very different, studying differences will reflect this. Something important to remember is that when you are studying you are most likely to retain information you review towards the beginning and ending of your sessions. Because of this it is far better to study in multiple shorter sessions as opposed to large cramming sessions.

When to Study

Another way to internalize more has to do with when you study. While it varies from person to person based on whether you are a morning person or night owl, in general the best time to study is at night. There are also benefits to going to sleep right after you study as your brain will continue absorbing the most recent thing you did while you sleep. This, however, does not mean staying up very late and only sleeping a few hours before a big test is a good strategy. In order to be most efficient and be best prepared for testing you should sleep about as much as you normally do before a test, or ideally for about seven to nine hours. It can also be important to schedule your studies if you are someone who sometimes procrastinates.

Stay on Topic

Even with removed distractions it can be easy to get drawn away from your work, especially during longer sessions. When you cannot change how long to study you should set other ways to keep on task. One way to do this if you have trouble with focus is to set times for work and breaks. A good time set is to work for twenty-five minutes and break for five. Having a set time like this leads one to get into the work more with knowledge that they will not be working for that long and if they need a break it will be coming soon. This is not a definite and concrete time period however, and if you get engrossed in your studies or work it is only beneficial to keep up the good work past the twenty-five-minute mark. You should not break longer than your preset time though.

Studying with a Partner

Another great way to be held accountable is to make a group of people with similar academic goals as you in your classes. As long as the people in your group are helpful and not distracting a group is a great way to be held answerable to study times, how long to study, and to keep each other focused, as well as answer each other’s questions.
